Subject: Changes in the library

Dear students,

From Monday 5 October the library will open at 8:00 in the morning, one hour earlier than before. It will close at 20:00 from Monday to Friday and at 17:00 on Saturdays. The library is closed on Sundays.

You can borrow up to four books for two weeks. If you return a book late, you pay 5 lira for each day. Please remember that the study rooms on the second floor are only for group work. If you want to study alone, use the quiet area on the first floor.

Every Saturday morning, a group of volunteers meets in the park near my house. They arrive at eight o'clock with gloves and plastic bags, and for two hours they collect the rubbish that has been left behind during the week. Nobody pays them. They do it because they got tired of complaining.

The group started three years ago with four neighbours and a page on social media. Today more than sixty people take part, although never all on the same day. The organiser, Melis, says the hardest part was not finding volunteers but persuading the local council to empty the bins more often. That took eleven months of emails.

What surprises visitors most is how little rubbish there is now. When people see a clean park, they are far less likely to drop anything in it. Melis calls this the real result: not the bags they fill, but the ones they no longer need to.
